Wine Bottle Bird Feeder
With spring coming on strong the birds have been quite active in our back yard. We had seen the wine bottle as a bird feeder concept but we wanted to make it our own. So, using some scrap cedar we had lying around and a single 1x2x8′ cedar board we were able to make this pretty awesome bird feeder. - 1 x 6 x 8′ Cedar Board (Really only need about 18″. I used some scrap I had)
- 1 x 2 x 8′ Cedar Board
- 1-1/4″ Brad Nails
- Wood Glue

How do you refill the feeder? Does the bottle slide out easily?
Yes. The bottle slides out easily so you can refill.
Hmm.. If it hangs by the bottle and the bottle easily slides out, what keeps the base attached while it’s hanging?
Never mind, the picture just looks like it’s hanging by the bottle, but I think you have it hanging by the base 😉
Mike, ha. The picture does look like that but the eyelets are attached to the top trim on 2 sides of the bottle.
Having sustained a left hand injury (three broken fingers) it was necessary for me to attend a rehabilitation centre in Salisbury, Wiltshire. After seeing the wine bottle feeder I used this simple plan as hand therapy that not only helped me regain tool control and hand strength but the wine bottle feeder also looks good in my garden. It all so gives a popular item back to future Hospital hand therapy patients. Thank you Jamison for the bottle feeder, it really has helped my recovery.
James what an awesome thing to hear. I am so glad that you were able to use these plans as part of your therapy. I am honored each time someone builds a project using one of my plans, but even more so that I was able to play a small part in your recovery.
I made the bird feeder and it turned out very nice. I cut the bottom off the bottle and made a cap for it to keep the water out of the seed. This works great for filling the feeder
That’s a great idea and sure does make for easy filling!

I added some PVC pipe to this feeder to make it free standing.

since I have several bottle of wine and they are not empty yet, I’ve decided to make a small modification to it. I still have to add a piece of trim around the sides and a dowel so that the birds can sit and eat.

What would be the cons of using common board instead of ceder?

I cut out the pieces to make a kit for my grandson but then I thought about some things I’d like to see on the feeder.1. Use a 1 or 2 liter plastic bottle2. Make it so it could be filled without removing the bottle3. Put a ledge around where the seed drops so more of it would stay on the platform4. Make perches for the birds to stand on.So I made a modified feeder.
