Description
A modern bench from four boards
This is the bench I designed to be as simple as it looks: three 2x8s and a single 2×4, a handful of screws, and a day in the shop. The angled legs and floating slat seat give it a modern, architectural look, but every cut is either a straight crosscut or a 5° angle. Nothing that needs a jig or a special tool.

Tools you’ll need
A circular saw or miter saw, a drill/driver, a Kreg XL pocket-hole jig, a square, a tape measure, a level, and clamps. The XL jig is only needed for one joint, where the back support meets the back leg, but that joint carries the whole back of the bench and the heavier XL screws are what make it hold. A standard pocket-hole jig will get you close. A miter saw makes the angled cuts faster and more repeatable, but it is not required.
